BACKGROUND & DETAILS:

The STAR ALLIANCE flag, "The Arc of Rainbow Stars," was carried atop Mt. Everest on two separate occasions in May of 1999 by the late, great Nepalese mountaineer Babu Chiri Sherpa. Babu kept an unheard-of, overnight vigil at the summit with the flag, symbolizing the extraordinary perseverance required to achieve peace. After returning the flag to Berkeley Babu said: "Everyone is climbing their own Mt. Everest." The famous flag was also signed by Poupeh, a young Iranian woman who bicycled around the world for peace, as she stopped by the Berkeley Persian Cultural Center in October of 2003. Poupeh signed the flag "in the name of love, friendship and global peace." The one-of-a-kind, intricate historical artifact was hand-sewn by Piedmont mother and business events producer Barbara Addleman. The group hopes to generate backing in order to mass produce its popular image toward ongoing, global inspiration toward "lasting peace, freedoms and friendships for all." Peter DuMont, Co-Founder and Education Director for STAR ALLIANCE, says: "The image of five stars happily connected is reminiscent of the human hand with its five fingers and palm, working together. It symbolizes a creative, harmonious integration of diversity in society" The flag and other STAR ALLIANCE memorabilia — including photos of the founders with celebrities such as Ted Koppel, Stevie Wonder and the late John Denver (the latter two as they received the group's "Star of Peace Award" in the 1980's) — add sizzle to the group's bold "Declaration for Universal Alliance." DuMont is "integrative author" of the evolving document. He says thousands of people have given their opinions and signed various draft editions along the way since 1985. The document is designed to serve as an instrument for intercultural commitment to universal peace ethics and aspirations, and ultimately to be signed by citizens everywhere towards "Our Highest Common Ideals." In addition to the latest draft, several historic editions of the Declaration will be on display December 15-27, including one signed by the Dalai Lama, singer Sarah Brightman and others in 1989; one signed by tenor Luciano Pavarotti in 1994, an "Expanded Edition" endorsed by the Oakland City Council in 1995; and one edition signed by hundreds of well wishers expressing greetings to Nelson Mandela during his 1990 "Victory Tour" stop in Oakland. The group's "StarBeam" character illustrations were created in 1999 by local artist and author Ray Nelson for use with DuMont's "Vocabulary of Peace" presentation in schools. The group hopes creative people and institutions with resources will come forward to help animate the characters for a series of potentially influential public service announcements for television. |

DuMont is available for lecture-presentations to schools, clubs and businesses.

Co-Founder Ernest Siravo is available to arrange charter "Goodwill Tours" for schools, businesses and the public.
